Flop, turn, river in poker

What are we talking about here? The flop, turn and river are rounds in Texas Hold’em. Before those, we have a preflop stage, where players put bets almost blindly. Then common cards are revealed in certain order and betting rounds continue.

What to take into account? Each round increases the chances of winning or reduces them to a minimum. During the flop, turn and river, you need to analyze your hand and make informed decisions. There is no place for fuss and mindless bluffing at these stages of poker.

What are flop, turn and river in poker?

Poker players have certain terms that define the main phases of the game. Among this terminology, there are the following words: flop, turn, and river. They represent three important interconnected phases of the game.

The first of these stages is the flop. This is the name of the phase in which the first three cards are revealed. It happens when preflop betting stage is over and the remaining players have put some money into the pot. The three cards that are revealed at the flop stage are common to all remaining players. Everyone can use them to make a combination.

The turn is the next stage of the game, during which the fourth common card is revealed. Thus, participants have another chance to make stronger combinations. The turn is the second betting round, during which players can get additional information and evaluate the strength of their hand.

Flop, turn, river in poker

The river is the last stage of the game, when the fifth common card appears on the table. This one is the last. At this point, you can still improve your hand and put another bet. This is the stage where people make final bets before showdown.

To achieve success in poker, you need to know its terms and use them correctly. The reason you want to know what flop, turn and river are is that those are key stages of the game. At every stage player assesses his hand and his situation, analyzes the bets, and takes into account the common cards on the table. All this helps you make informed decisions.

Flop Characteristics

When each participant has received hole cards and the preflop stage is over, the flop stage begins. This is the point where remaining players get common cards. The first three common cards appear on the table. Those cards largely determine the course of the hand.

At the flop stage, the player’s task is to evaluate his hand and possible combinations. This determines the further strategy. A strong hand allows you to play more actively, but if the combination is not that strong, you should approach the available options more carefully.

After analyzing hand potential on the flop, everyone decides whether to play aggressively or not. Sometimes people just fold their hands if they hit nothing worthy.

At the flop stage, you need to be able to read the board in order to assess the risks. For example, in a situation where all three common cards are of the same suit, you need to take into account the possibility of a flush in your opponents’ hands. If you have a good hand, such as a three of a kind or a full house, it may be worth start betting, raising and increasing the pot.

Turn Characteristic

This is the second step in the flop, river, and turn sequence. A fourth common card appears on the table. Thus, players can make more combinations of hands and have more information.

At the turn stage, decision-making becomes more difficult. You need to carefully observe your opponents, analyze the situation and understand possible improvements of your hand in the following stage. The strategy you choose at this stage is very important for a successful game.

This is where the dynamics of the game can change. If the turn doesn’t improve your hand but it’s still good, consider betting to protect the pot. If new card improves many of opponent’s potential hands, carefully assess the risks. If the odds of winning are low, you may have to fold.

The turn often becomes the decisive phase of the game, during which you need to analyze what the prospects for strengthening your hand are and what combinations your opponents may have. A favorable situation for bluffing may also arise on turn.

River Characteristics

This is the last stage of flop-turn-river sequence where the last, fifth common card is revealed. Here is where the result of the hand is to be determined.

It is important to harness your emotions. You cannot let the thoughts of possible winning or losing guide your decisions. The decision must be thoughtful and based on an analysis of the strength of your hand and the combinations that your opponents may have.

Since all the cards are on the table, it is the final betting round. This is where you make your last analysis of the strength of your hand and villain’s range of possible combinations. If you are confident in the strength of your hand, you can go for a big bet or a raise to maximize winnings. If, on the other hand, your situation is shaky, you should try to keep the pot small to cut the possible losses.

Since all the cards are already on the table, you have maximum information to analyze the situation and evaluate your chances of winning. Increasing the pot with a strong hand is a justified decision. However, if you are not sure, it may be better to check.

The importance of understanding pot size and betting on flop, turn and river

The key thing to consider when you decide to bet when playing poker is the size of the pot. It is also necessary to assess the odds. This will help you understand whether the risk is worth it compared to the possible gain.

It is not that important what stage we are currently at: turn, river or flop. The stage of the game does not necessarily determine the betting size; it is betting that determines the dynamics of the game at any stage. If the bets are high, players with weak hands are likely to fold. Smaller bet often mean a bigger variety of combos.

Board Texture Analysis

The texture of the board is the combination of all the common cards; the players’ strategy largely depends on its composition. For example, if the board is dry, meaning there is a very small chance of making a straight or flush in the end, the value of strong made hands (a set or full house) increases.

At each stage, you need to analyze the interaction between the texture of the board and your hand and the expected range of combinations of other player. Depending on this, you decide whether an aggressive or more cautious playing style is appropriate.

Using Position and Hand Range

The player’s position at the table is very important. Those who play in late positions have more information: they see their opponent’s actions and can more accurately guess the range of their hands. This way you can make decisions that are more informed.

The better you understand the range of hands of other players, the easier it is to figure out the betting. When you are confident that you have a stronger range than other players do, you will raise or bet without a shadow of a doubt.

Frequently asked questions about flop, turn and river

Who reveals his hand first?

The one who put the last bet. If no one has put any bets, the first player to the left of dealer shows his or her hand down first. Then everyone shows his or her hands clockwise. The one whose combination is stronger takes the pot. If two or more players have combinations of the same strength, they share the pot between them in equal parts.

How do you know when the flop stage is complete?

During the flop betting stage, each player can check, fold, bet or raise. If the first player to the dealer’s left checks or folds, then the next player clockwise is to act. When every player at the table responses to the highest bet by either calling or folding and there are no more raises, the flop stage is over. If everyone folds to the highest bet, the hand is over and the bettor gets the pot.

The etymology of flop, turn and river?

The dictionary does not answer the question of where such names as flop, turn, and river come from in poker. One can only speculate on the original meaning of the words. Flop basically means to hang down or to fail, to fall, to lose money also (which is interesting in the context). Turn means a lot of things, but maybe the closest meaning to our context is “to become something”. And finally river is just a large natural stream of water.

In Texas Hold’em and Omaha there are technically four stages of betting: preflop, flop, turn and river. Preflop is a stage, where people put bets only taking into account their position and hole cards, because common cards are yet to be revealed. Despite playing blindly, experienced players can draw conclusions about how strong their opponents’ hands are and make the necessary decisions.

To achieve success at the poker table, you need to understand what strategy to choose at each stage of the game and be able to control yourself regardless of the situation. Learn, gain experience, carefully observe other player, and good luck will accompany you!
